It seems to me that we all should be listening to and watching our body. Our bodies are intelligent and are always communicating with us. Our bodies communicate with us physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually. It is always giving us information and we use this information to recognize where we are, what we are doing, whether we are in trouble or not, and how our body is doing. When we are sitting, we feel our butt in contact with the chair. When we are eating, we taste and feel what we are eating. When we are touching an object, we are getting information regarding whether the thing we are touching is hot, cold, smooth or rough. Our body tells us when it is working well and when it is in trouble. It tells us whether we are ill or healthy. It tells us whether we are upright or falling. It tells us whether we are safe or about to be injured.
From infancy we have been learning to listen to our body and when we do, we are likely much more successful in life. When we don’t, well, we can very rapidly get into physical, mental, emotional or spiritual problems. All of this applies to both men and women. While everyone registers this information, each of us does this differently, hence everyone interprets their information differently based on who they are and how they have learned to use, interpret or act on this information.
As a physician, I use this information to determine whether you are healthy or sick. For me it is the signs and symptoms your body is giving you, telling you what is going on and what your problems are. When you are having pain, you know where the pain is, you know how severe it is, how it comes and goes and how it affects you. This is your body talking to you. It is your body telling you that something is wrong and needs to be dealt with. These physical signs and symptoms are not random or chaotic. They have a reason for being present. While they may seem confusing to you, they are generally very clear to a trained professional who has been trained to understand and interpret what they are saying. Since your body cannot talk in words, it talks to you in signs, symptoms and physical findings known as, Body Symptom Language (BSL).
Built into every set of signs, symptoms and physical findings is a more advanced code that tells us how to recognize the cause or unresolved conflict. This gives rise to or triggers the medical problem. With understanding the signs, symptoms and physical findings (the Basic BSL), we can treat the medical problem, we can cure the medical problem and return you to full and complete normal and optimal health and wellness.
We are lucky, our body is intelligent, and it tells us whether we are healthy or ill. If ill, which organs and tissues are involved, and even how we can fix them. I’m lucky because I know this, and I listen to you and listen to your body. I’m also lucky because when I effectively listen to you, this helps me to live a more meaningful life for myself and this help me do my career more exceptionally well.
The ultimate lesson to take from this is to pay attention to your body. When it is not working right, listen to it and come see me, or your family doctor as early as possible so you can prevent, treat, manage and cure all illness before it becomes too great a problem. If your family doctor cannot solve your problems or merely treats signs and symptoms, your problem will not be resolved and over time your body will reach a state of chronic illness, a state where it maybe too far along to either resolve, reverse, cure or eliminate the cause, a problem that at one point was reversible.
