Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) is a medical treatment used to address low testosterone levels in men. While TRT has been shown to have many positive effects on the male body, its impact on cholesterol levels is not entirely clear-cut.
Some studies suggest that testosterone therapy may have a positive effect on cholesterol levels by decreasing levels of total cholesterol, LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol (often referred to as LDL-cholesterol or the “bad” cholesterol), and triglycerides, while increasing levels of HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol (often referred to as HDL-cholesterol, the “good” cholesterol). These changes often lead to improvement in the individuals overall cholesterol profile and often a valuable reduction in their risk of cardiovascular disease.
It’s important, however, to be aware that not all studies have shown consistent positive results, and some research has even suggested that testosterone therapy may have adverse effects on cholesterol levels, such as increasing LDL-cholesterol. The impact of TRT on cholesterol levels may also depend on factors such as the dosage, duration of therapy, individual patient characteristics, and underlying health conditions.
Fortunately, here at Advanced Wellness Medical we take absolutely no chances as we take your cholesterol levels before you start TRT at between 2-3 months after you are already on TRT, at 6-months after starting TRT and at 1-year of being on TRT. If your total cholesterol, your LDL-cholesterol or your triglycerides increase, or your HDL-cholesterol decreases, we either increase or decrease your testosterone dosage to obtain whatever maximum benefit is available to you. Hence, we are always on top of any positive or negative change in your cholesterol profile and we are always working to make sure you get the maximum benefits possible with the least potential negative effects.
