Sex Hygiene – Simple Do’s and Don’ts About Sex
There are always questions for what men and women can do to protect themselves from problems during and after sex. Sex is good but for some men and women there can be problems that follow. Some of these problems are obvious, others are not so obvious.
Protect Against Urinary Tract Infections
One problem is urinary tract infections (UTIs) for both men and women. Here’s a simple solution. Urinate immediately after sex. Then, wash the area around, but not inside, your genitals with plain warm water. You can use a mild soap, but if you have sensitive skin or you already have an infection, soap can dry out and irritate the genital area. Men, if you have any foreskin, gently pull it back and wash underneath. Gently cleaning yourself after sex can protect you from infection later on. All of this can be done in warm (or hot) shower, together, if you like, the with the idea of keeping the sex play going.
Douching Good or Bad?
Many women have been told that douching is the “perfect” thing to do. Studies suggest that women do not need to clean the inside their vagina after sex. Douching can lead to infections. Douching disturbs the normal pH balance of the vagina and in doing so opens women up to infection. Either do nothing at all, or if you have to douche, use a commercial douche solution with white distilled vinegar as this will less likely throw off the pH of your vagina. Best is a prepackaged mix which has been set to the right pH. If you do nothing your vagina will clean itself naturally. A mild but not unpleasant sex scent is normal, it is not a sign of an infection of health problem. An unpleasant odor or smell, could suggest a problem and suggests a Gyn consult as soon as possible.
I think this is a good start. Sex is important, so I will finish up this article with a few other important tips next month. In the meantime, keep healthy and enjoy life!
