Testosterone provides many amazing health and wellness benefits for both men and women.
These benefits range from helping to create clear thinking, increasing libido and interest in sex, increasing stamina, improving organ function, reducing the overall risk for both heart attacks and strokes, creating healthier skin, and increasing genital health to strengthening your bones and helping you build muscle. Possibly, other than reducing risk of heart disease and stroke, some of the most important and vital of these benefits, are testosterone’s effect on building muscles and strengthening bones.
Normal and/or elevated testosterone blood levels are one of most essential factors involved in the development of our muscles, our bones and our body fat distribution. Testosterone plays an important role in our day to day strength and feelings of vitality, endurance and elimination of fatigue. These total positive effects transcend what we see when we look in the mirror, however, it may play a role in whether we like what we see or we do not. Who we are in testosterone often translates into our daily capacity to do our daily job and ensure our overall survival.
At this point, I like to suggest we think of testosterone as our “warrior hormone.” Those with just the right amount of testosterone are responsible for their own personal survival and in fact the survival of our entire clean and society. Those individuals with either low or non-existent testosterone are often at a survival disadvantage and may not survive or thrive even under the normal stresses of life. We humans are a predator species, we are almost constantly war with ourselves, with our environment with others. The warriors in our community (the military, police, highway patrol, coast guard, firefighters and first responders) rely on testosterone (also estrogen in women) to protect them from their daily ongoing battle to win over external forces. These are the men and women who either have the highest testosterone (estrogen) or the most balanced hormonal (testosterone and estradiol) levels.
The presence of a descent blood level of testosterone increases the power of our brain and nervous system, increases neurotransmitters, and encourages tissue growth for repair after injury. Testosterone interacts with nuclear receptors in our DNA, encourages and manages protein synthesis and elevates our day today levels of growth hormone. All of these are actions designed to ensure our survival and ability to thrive. When taken together, these actions along with exercise lead to building muscle, increasing our strength and increasing our will and capacity to protect ourselves, our family, friends and neighbors. Improve our ability to survive and thrive.
Testosterone acts to stimulate increased bone density and triggers our bone marrow to manufacture red blood cells so can have increased stamina and hence last longer on the battlefield. For those who are actually warriors, if and when wounded, this allow them to better survive and recover. Also, to not just last longer on the battlefield, but also to protect those they fight for and themselves to end up winning the battle. Men with low levels of testosterone, or very low levels of testosterone, are more likely to suffer from bone fractures (broken bones), excessive bleeding and increased chance of becoming incapacitated hence out of the battle or dead. As we age, those members of our society with the lowest testosterone are more likely to fall (because of poor balance, due to unbalanced and inadequate muscle strength, fall and fracture a hip, an arm, leg or spinal bone, injure themselves and die prematurely, even if and when they are otherwise healthy.
On a day today basis, low or very low testosterone is also responsible for tens of thousands of on the job injuries. Injuries which occur because of inadequate overall strength, poor balance, lifting more than they can appropriately handle, falls, weak bones, and a host of other reasons lack of adequate testosterone creates that increases protect risk of injury.
Finally, testosterone plays an important role in fat metabolism, helping both men and women to burn fat more efficiently. Low testosterone levels lead to increase body fat, the so called “ring around the waist,” also known as Central “brown fat” Obesity, which causes a sense of negative aging, carrying more weight, increased risk of heart attack and stroke, high blood pressure, increased pressure and weight on the individual’s hips, knees, ankle, feet and back leading to osteoarthritis, degenerative joint disease, pain involving the neck, back and joint pain.
When all of your hormones are correctly balanced, you are balanced. When your hormones are balanced you are healthier and happier. When your hormones stay balanced, you increase both your longevity (anti-aging) and your quality of life.
